FIRST-EVER CHILDREN'S QUAILAPALOOZA SET FOR APRIL 18

FIRST-EVER CHILDREN’S QUAILAPALOOZA SET FOR
APRIL 18 AT NATIONAL RANCHING HERITAGE CENTER

A declining bobwhite population in Texas will be the major emphasis in the first-ever children’s Quailapalooza from 1 to 3:30 p.m. April 18 at the National Ranching Heritage Center (NRHC) in Lubbock.

The NRHC will partner with the Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University to host a hands-on educational presentation for children in grades one through six focusing on Northern Bobwhite Quail and the science behind studying this rangeland inhabitant.

“For many ranchers, the Northern Bobwhite Quail is a treasured rangeland inhabitant. Unfortunately, bobwhite populations are declining throughout their historic range and populations in Texas,” said Dr. Brad Dabbert, a Texas Tech professor and member of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Upland Game Bird Advisory Committee.

Dr. Dabbert and Texas Tech graduate students will share their knowledge and research on the bobwhite quail and give participants the opportunity to see live adult quail and chicks, learn about thermal cameras and radio telemetry, and observe a quail nest and eggs. Children will learn what quail eat and see how scientists use cameras as a tool to study quail and learn about predators.

This event is free for Junior Rough Rider members and $5 for non-members. Space is limited, so if you are interested in your child attending, RSVP to Julie Hodges at julie.hodges@ttu.edu or 806-742-0498.

The NRHC is a unique 27-acre museum and historical park that offers educational programs and exhibits to promote interest in ranching history and contemporary ranching issues. Located at 3121 Fourth St. adjacent to the Texas Tech University campus, the center provides 48 authentic dwellings and ranch structures from some of the nation’s most historic ranches.
