Women in Politics: Conversations about Race and Gender - Tonight!

The Diversity Cabinet of the Texas Tech Student Government Association presents "Women in Politics:  Conversation about Race and Gender" on August 26 for Women's Equality Day at 6:30pm in the Estacado Theater.

"My presence before you symbolizes a new era in American politics." That's what the late Shirley Chisholm said in 1972 when she announced her candidacy for the presidency, making her the first black woman in a major party to take a shot. Twenty years later, in 1992, four women is all it took to declare that year "The Year of Women" in politics.  Among the women,  Patty Murray, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and Carol Moseley Braun, which three of the four were White women. The one woman of color — Moseley Braun — has since retired. Today, numbers from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University show that just over 30 percent of the women serving in Congress today are of color.

SGA will be hosting two speakers to discuss the impacts and challenges that women face in politics today, followed by questions from the audience.

Questions to consider at this forum include:

1.) How do women-of-color policymakers approach their work?

2.) Are women and women of color more likely to prioritize issues related to women, children and families?

3.) How important is policy, activism and lobbying, not just politics, to women?
