El Grito Programming Grant

The Cross-Cultural Academic Advancement Center is accepting proposals for an academic collaboration with the annual El Grito celebration. Activities may include but are not limited to panel discussions, film(s), lectures, or other activities supporting the learning outcomes of El Grito.

About El Grito:

A gathering of the TTU community to celebrate 205 years of Mexico’s Independence.

205 years ago, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla made a decision that revolutionized the course of Mexican history. Hidalgo, a Catholic priest in the village of Dolores initiated the call for Mexico’s Independence from Spain, who had exploited and oppressed Mexicans for ten generations. Every year at 11:00 p.m. on September 15th, Mexicans led by the president of Mexico shout the Grito, honoring the crucial and impulsive action taken by Hidalgo. The CCAAC will join cities across the nation to celebrate this important celebration honoring the culture and traditions of Mexican-American and Hispanic populations. As being done in Mexico, various events educating populations about Mexican culture and history will take place, and the CCAAC will provide Texas Tech students and the Lubbock community with cross-cultural learning opportunities through workshops and celebrations on this day. Various classes on campus will be invited to attend the events.

Purpose:

To bring students, faculty, staff and community members together to celebrate Mexico’s Independence and to learn about Latin American countries’ independence celebrations.

To bring student groups together to interact with each other in a safe and welcoming environment.
