On-line Abuse of Feminists: Another Attempt to Silence Women
  • Dr. Ruth Lewis - Public Talk: On-line Abuse of Feminists: Another Attempt to Silence Women
  • October 9 | TLPDC Room 153 | 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Gathering of advocates for feminism can be seen throughout history in the form of consciousness raising groups.  Today, social media and blogs are creating a broader space for reaching out and discussing challenges and possibilities of internet activism. As with most internet media, there have been a number of online feminist that have shared their experiences of harassment, vicious comments of a graphic nature and life altering threats made against them. Disagreeing with issues and voicing ones opinion is not the point.  The issue lies much deeper with women taking up public space and repeatedly being told to “shut your mouth”, “get back in the kitchen”, and "die of cancer”.  Not to mention, feminist have had their YouTube channel flagged as terrorism in an effort to be pulled from the media source; example, Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist Frequency.

Dr. Lewis is the Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in Sociology at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK.  Ruth's career spans academia, the public sector and the third sector. In her work, paid and unpaid, she has worked towards social justice and improving public services, whether through her research about violence (especially violence against women and lethal violence), her role as Chair of a local domestic violence charity, her regional policy development work about sport and gender or, while at the National Audit Office, her 'value for money' examinations of national government departments. Her current research interests focus on activism, particularly the impacts of feminist activism about violence against women.
