Earn $1,000 Discussing Ideas with Other Students
The McLane Teammates Reading Program is a one semester, non-credit reading group where participants read and discuss selections from classic works and from contemporary scholars that address important questions in political economy. Participants that successfully complete the program receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The McLane Teammates Reading Program is sponsored by the Free Market Institute (FMI) at Texas Tech University. The program complements similar programs at Southern Methodist University and at Baylor University. Participants meet weekly for Socratic-style discussions that are facilitated by a Texas Tech University faculty member and focused on particular topics that address the broader themes of the program.

The theme for the fall 2016 program is Markets and Morality. Participants will explore a number of questions concerning the moral and ethical dimensions of the market system including:

  • Which is more just: socialism or capitalism?
  • By what moral standard should we evaluate markets?
  • What moral norms do markets need to function effectively?
  • Does capitalism make us selfish?
  • Do markets corrupt our character or destroy communities?
  • What sorts of markets should be allowed?

In their exploration of these questions, participants will read and discuss classic and contemporary works by economists and philosophers such as F.A. Hayek and G.A. Cohen, among many others, that explore the moral dimensions of market exchange.
