This course is designed for undergraduate students involved in plant science research.  The emphasis is on learning structure and organization of plant cell, chromosome and genes, central dogma of molecular biology, gene expression, gene identification and functional analysis.  Specific importance will be given to methods of gene identification and functional characterization.  During lab sessions, students will be trained in molecular methods such as primer design, gene amplification, vector construction, protein-protein interaction studies, plant transformation, transient gene silencing using Virus Induced Gene Silencing (VIGS) and quantitative PCR for gene expression analysis.  The students develop an understanding and appreciation of functional genomics tools and approaches.
