FALL GRADUATE ELECTIVE COURSE: MATERIAL CULTURE
MUSM 5329 “Material Culture” (CRN: 38219):  How do we examine objects and determine what they tell us—about their creators, about their users, about the time period they originate from, and about our culture today.  Whether we are talking about decorative art, furniture, a blender, or a farm implement, each object we encounter can tell us a great deal—we just need to know how to ask the questions.  Great graduate elective course for any anthropologist, historian, or interpreter/educator, not just students focusing on museum science.  Course is a lecture-discussion format with extensive analysis of reading assignments; exercises in “reading” objects; and field trips through the galleries to discuss how material culture studies plays out in interpretation and understanding.
