European Studies and the History Dept. are pleased to announce a public lecture on MORAL CHOICES IN THE THIRD REICH by Dr. Peter Fritzsche, University of Illinois. Dr. Fritzsche is an internationally renowned scholar on the Third Reich. He will be speaking on understanding choices, decisions, collaboration, and complicity in Nazi Germany. Could one hate the Nazis, but love the Third Reich? Historians often think of Germans as seduced, poisoned, or terrorized by the Nazis, but there was also considerable overlap between "Germans" and "Nazis," certainly before the seizure of power in 1933, but therefore also after. There was active deliberation among Germans as they considered becoming Aryans and anti-Semites or rejecting traditional humanitarian ethical standards. In the Third Reich, Germans talked--what did they talk about, and where did their discussions lead? How did they justify crimes?
