One cannot deny the importance of sports to American society and popular culture, and this seminar will study sports films’ vital significance in representing the intersection of sports and social identities. How do social identities and social issues play themselves out in sports films, and in what ways do the tensions and contradictions within sports films’ contests signify broader ideological contestations? What is the economic impact of professional sports on the athlete, the sport, and the spectator? Where do ethics in sports begin—and end?
