Hub Theatre Group and Skyviews of Texas Tech University are hosting the second annual Broadway and Gourmet on Avenue J on the afternoon of Sunday, October 19th. Free and open to the public, the event will take place on Avenue J in the arts district near the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts and will feature two events: a series of Broadway performances from local performers, and an outdoor appetizer cooking competition.
The cooking competition is inspired by those which have been popularized on Top Chef and various shows on the Food Network. Teams will have several days in advance of the competition to conceptualize one appetizer, which must utilize a ‘secret basket ingredient’ sponsored and provided by Ben E. Keith. On the day of the competition, each team must prepare and serve their appetizer at designated stations set near Avenue J and 5th Street. The first 200 guests in attendance will receive passes to be able to walk through the area to different stations and sample each team’s appetizers, and the winner will be chosen based on guest voting as well as from a panel of guest judges.
Competing in the event are amateur teams of students from Texas Tech's Restaurant, Hotel, & Institutional Management program, as well as some of Lubbock's most esteemed restaurants/chefs including:
- The Crafthouse Gastropub
- The Funky Door
- North Catering Company
- The West Table
Wine will also be available for purchase by McPherson Cellars. Be sure to mark your calendars for an afternoon of great music, delicious food, and lots of fun!
